The History and Story of Dragonair

This page is last-updated on January 1, 1998.

Welcome to the page about Dragonair. Dragonair is the second airline of Hongkong. It mainly serves large cities in China and other holiday resorts in the Asia Pacific region. Dragonair is one of the airlines in the world with the youngest fleet. Its oldest aircraft is only about 4 years old. It is also one of the airlines in the world that only uses Airbus Industrie's aircrafts.
Information shown below is mainly obtained from Cathay Pacific and Dragonair.

Dragonair was established in April 1985 making its first commercial flights between Hongkong and Kota Kinabalu with a B737-200A. It had a network of routes to southern and eastern China. In 1990, Cathay Pacific assumed the management of Dragonair. This was the beginning of a partnership between the two airlines. After this, Dragonair flied to Beijing and Shanghai by using Lockheed Tristars leased by Cathay Pacific.

As the route network has grown, so have the airlines's fleet. Dragonair leased A320s from ILFC a few years later, so as to replace the old and unreliable B737-200As. In 1995, Dragonair leased A330-300s from Cathay Pacific and ILFC to replace the Tristars.

Now, Dragonair is one of the airlines in the world that wholly uses Airbuses as their fleet. Dragonair now serves 18 cities in China, and 8 destinations in Asian region.

Dragonair is now renewing its A320-200s from ILFC. Dragonair has ordered some new A320-200s and may lease A321.
